Is Debt Consolidation the Answer?

Wouldnt it be wonderful if by miracle someone out of the blue came along and banished all of those debts away at a click of a finger? Unfortunately it is not as simple as that as the debts so many of us have collected over the years unless paid off will cumulate interest.

There are ways of making your life easier when it comes to paying off or reducing your debts. The obvious answer here really is to not get yourself in debt in the first place. This is however often easier said than done as there may be a number of reasons why people get themselves into debt in the first place.

Debt consolidation can help in reducing the burden of your monthly payments of your debts. It is often a useful option for those who cannot keep up with all the different payments that need to be made and when. The term debt consolidation literally means to consolidate all of your existing debts into one, hopefully making it a more manageable debt. Well thats usually the catch line that these companies use to entice us into doing this.

Your debts will not disappear by consolidating them. Most credit cards and unsecured loans can be included when doing this. If you think that by consolidating all of your existing loans into one will mean thats the end of that, then think again. What you are doing is usually increasing your loan term to the consolidation company to decrease the amount you have to pay monthly. This is how the debt is more manageable and a lot of the times less on a monthly basis than prior to consolidating them.

Something many forget to take into consideration is that by doing this, you are prolonging the term of your debt. So if you were hoping to be debt free in a few years, this will not be the case by consolidating them.

You need to have a good think about your overall debt situation before committing to consolidating them. Though it can be very attractive and worthwhile to those who are struggling to keep up with the way things are currently, if you dont need to or can afford to keep up with the current situation, it may be worth continuing to do so. You will be debt free sooner by doing this and the burden of those debts will be history if you carry on making your payments.
